It seems One Piece is trying to slow things down somewhat between arcs. This is out of necessity because of where the manga is. Because of this the episodes lately seem to drag at times. That is not to say there in not some good parts still in them. It is this writer’s opinion that they should have spent more time with each of the Straw Hats, giving them a full episode instead of just a piece of one. Or at least given us a larger portion of an episode to learn more about a particular Straw Hat. Who knows, maybe there is a method to the writers madness.
The Impel Down arc focuses on Luffy trying to reach Ace in time to save him. Unfortunately Ace is ‘done away with’ before Luffy can get to him. With the execution of Ace, it makes you realize just how little time was spent with him. What time there was spent was usually good material. We caught glimpses of what Ace was going through, but for the most part Ace was the strong and silent type as he waited for whatever was going to happen next. Most of the One Piece world is in that “what’s gonna happen next” mind frame. They take you on a tour of the world to see what everyone is expecting to happen. Will there be an all out war if Whitebeard shows up? Will the execution of Ace take place with no interruptions? Or maybe nothing happens at all.
The location of Marineford plus all the things being done to prep for it appears in the first half of the episode. They do a good job of covering these facets. Marineford has 5 out of 7 of its warlords working above and quite a few Naval Admirals working below. There are 100,000 naval men present at Marineford. You would think they are ready for just about anything. Marineford wants to make sure they don’t run into any problems like they did with Shike many years ago. So there is a chance things will not go in favor of Marineford. Marineford is so sure of their chances that they have let it leak that they are trying to get information out of Ace that he is not willing to share. In the meantime Luffy and his current gang continue to get closer to Marineford.
