Luffy a 17 year old boy who obtains supernatural abilities after eating a magical fruit known as the “Devil’s Fruit”, makes it his ambition to find the treasure One Piece. The magic fruit gives Monkey’s body a stretchy quality like that of rubber. So he sets off on the quest with a dysfunctional group of the strangest yet heroic pirates including, Ronoa Zolo, Nami and Usopp, calling their group the Straw Hats.

At first, after feeling awful the last day, gave a feeling that he would be doing the repair of the ship, but it was not to be. Usopp fails to show any compassion when the hapless chopper is used as bait, which admittedly was quite imminent. The Strawhats have set their eyes on the gold especially after choosing the two groups.

But viewers are eagerly anticipating the return of One Piece, which is the moment when the arc finally switches into Action Mode.

The twelve episodes were written in a pair of discs, which were packaged within two thin packs. With a total runtime of 320 minutes, this show secured a conservative TV 13 rating. No real rough language, sexual situations or nudity are in this show. The little violence does occur is quite tolerable.

Language options are ordinary sub & dub, which provides the choice of original Japanese dialogue, dubbed English voice track, and the most common option of English subtitles.

The special features are confined to text-less songs and a tiny crop of Funimation trailers placed on the second disc.

After watching the show, anyone have to come out with something like these- really a fantastic show! Though, there were Many of the shonen titles, which will amaze the world ouyside Japan (Bleach, Dragon Ball Z, Law of Ueki and so on). Actually the fact that it is marketed as a massive shonen saga will attract most of the visitors to give it a try. However, Season 2: First Voyage is really an engaging adventure. Filled up with engaging story line, pretty slick visuals and likable casts, this show has all the ingredients of gaining huge popularity.

Now some more on the series itself. Monkey doesn’t always mean a monkey business. Monkey D. Luffy is the case in point and a pirate by ‘profession’. He has his targets clear (the elusive One Piece treasure and to be the greatest pirate) and can do anything to get that. Now comes the twist in the tale, Luffy has eaten the devil fruits that give the person some powers. So what does Luffy get? Well, a body that feels and behaves as if made up of rubber!

To take the story further, we have a guy who will be crowned the pirate king if he finds the ‘One Piece’ and the only way to do this seems to be to recruit others. This brings in other characters like Zoro (pirate hunter), Nami (thief-bout only for pirates), Usopp (marksmen with many remarkable talents like lying, cowardice but a nice slingshot skill) and Sanji (a cook) who is as good in the kitchen as in the battles.

The show brings about fights, laughter, lot of action and a great plot all in one package. In America though, it didn’t have a great beginning as in the Japanese version. This happened mainly due to the tampering of the original version in America. This wasn’t appreciated by Fans and resulted in a disastrous performance. But to the show’s and fan’s relief Funimation stepped in bring relief for both.

Funimation has a remarkable style of its own when it comes to anime. Their content, presentation and even their pool of voice actors is unparalled. The best part about Funimation version of ‘One piece’ is that they are trying to preserve as much originality in the new version as was in the Japanese one. Little, to no meaning is lost in the dubs and translations. This is something the audiences really appreciate and have aptly rewarded also.

Let us also talk of the voices behind the characters. Luffy is given voice by Colleen Clinkenbeard, who no doubt is one of the best in the business. Others who are equally good are the likes of Luci Christian, Christopher Sabat, and many more. They all give this show a charm that is unique not just content wise but also in terms of the audio.

What else is unique about the Funimation version? There is a feature called ‘Marathon Mode’, which plays all episodes on the disk non stop. This is a pleasure viewing because it entitles no recaps and both opening and closing sequences come only once. So anyone can enjoy non stop six episodes one after the other without the botheration and time wastage of recaps. Considering that ‘One Piece’ is long, it helps in covering the entire season quickly.

Presently season one is available in four sets but a little more remains for the season to be completely covered. But now that ‘One Piece’ is available in the format which was much desired by the fans of the show, all the wait is worth the watch!

It is no surprise that ‘Naruto’ has drawn much promotional love shown by Viz over the last few years. This brings the multivolume release of the US and the Japanese versions closer. Another very prominent initiative is the Internet broadcast of the recent anime episodes.

There is much difference not just in the Japanese and American versions, but also in the way they were received. In Japan, ‘One Piece’ pirates are supreme. Period. So whether it is Monkey D. Luffy or his fellow crew members, they all have contributed in making the Shonen Jump series the second highest selling. But in America the ‘One Piece’ story was much different, at least the beginning. The English version of the anime was very much edited resulting in loss of some fans. This happened when the show was with 4Kids, but luckily it was picked up by Funimation and then the tide turned.

However, manga is not doing as well as the ‘Naruto’. Also, looks like some focus is shifting from ‘Naruto’. Some reports also suggest that now US ‘One Piece’ anime and manga will release along side Japanese ones. Also the anime catch-up can now be done with subtitled episodes. It starts with episode 391 and all following ones will lead up to episode 403. these can be caught on www.onepieceofficial.com. All the episodes will be posted weekly to keep all the fans abreast even on the online version.

Meanwhile, future plans for manga also seem to be underway. Looks like the latest chapters will run in Shonen Jump (US) in the coming fall. But one thing that remains to be seen is how the huge gap of about 33 to 34 volumes will be bridges? Chapter 195 was the last one in volume 21, which is where it was in the US. While the latest chapter running in Japan is chapter 542. This is a huge gap to be covered for one season and the task doesn’t look menial by any chance.

So what will be Viz’s promotion code for this one? Will it be similar to ‘Naruto’ where huge volumes make head way at the same time or will something new be found to surprise fans and critics alike?

It is highly unlikely that ‘One Piece‘ will be as successful as ‘Naruto’. But Viz’s key shot is the two pronged strategy that it has adopted. With two high-profile series running, it will be rather unexpected if this doesn’t help Viz in the wider context.
